Keith Richards gets no satisfaction from Swedish press
The Rolling Stones guitarists demands an apology from two newspapers for negative reviews of the band's recent show.

By KARL RITTER
The Associated Press

Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards has demanded an apology from Swedish newspapers for their scathing reviews of the group's performance in the country earlier this month.

Tabloids Expressen and Aftonbladet gave thumbs down to the Aug. 3 concert at Ullevi stadium in Goteborg, with Expressen suggesting Richards was "superdrunk" on stage.

"This is a first!" the 63-year-old rock star wrote in a letter published by Stockholm daily Dagens Nyheter. "Never before have I risen to the bait of a bad review.

"But this time ... I have to stand up ... for our fans all over Sweden ... to say that you owe them, and us, an apology."

Dagens Nyheter said it received the letter from concert organizer EMA Telstar. Company head Thomas Johansson told The Associated Press that Richards wrote the letter and gave it to him after reading translations of the Swedish reviews.

"There were 56,000 people in Ullevi stadium who bought a ticket to our concert – and experienced a completely different show than the one you 'reviewed,"' the letter said.

"How dare you cheapen the experience for them – and for the hundreds of thousands of other people across Sweden who weren't at Ullevi and have only your 'review' to go on.

"Write the truth. It was a good show."

In his review, Aftonbladet's music writer Markus Larsson gave the concert a score of two on a five-point scale, and said Richards appeared "a bit confused."

"I am not going to apologize for my subjective opinion," Larsson told the paper's Web edition on Wednesday. "It is Keith who should apologize. After all it costs around 1,000 kronor ($145) to see a rock star who can hardly handle the (guitar) riff to 'Brown Sugar' any more."

Keith Richards Undergoes Brain Surgery
Reuters
LONDON/WELLINGTON (May 8) - Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards underwent surgery in New Zealand Monday to relieve headaches after a fall while vacationing in Fiji, his London publicists said.
"The operation was a complete success, and Keith is already up and talking with his family today," the publicists said in a statement about the surgery at the Ascot Hospital in Auckland.

The publicists declined to comment on a report published in the New Zealand Herald that the surgery was performed to relieve pressure from a blood clot on the brain. The operation normally involves drilling a hole through the skull to drain the clot.

Such a blood clot, or subdural hematoma, can be caused by mild knocks to the head.

"He will need a few weeks' recuperation," the statement added, forcing the cancellation of early concert dates on the European leg of the Rolling Stones' "A Bigger Bang" tour.

The 62-year-old rocker had been under medical observation in Auckland following the fall in late April.

He had been feeling well after being examined by doctors last week, the statement added.

"However, after complaining of headaches yesterday, doctors thought it prudent to move ahead with a small operation to remove the pressure," the statement said.

Last week a spokeswoman for the band said Richards had only suffered a mild concussion and would not require surgery.

The Ascot Hospital told Reuters on Monday that Richards had been discharged but would give no further details.

Richards was flown to Auckland after the accident while on vacation in Fiji following the Asian leg of the band's tour through Japan, China, Australia and New Zealand.

The European leg of the tour will go ahead, but its start will be delayed to June, the publicists said. The band had been due to open on May 27 in Barcelona, Spain, and May 29 in Madrid.

Full details of the rescheduled dates will be announced shortly.

Anybody out there hear the one about Keith making off with a fan's Fender Strat? I first read about it in 'Old Gods ... Almost Dead' and although I've got a hundred nasty Keith anecdotes swimming 'round my head, I've got to confess, that one stuck with me awhile. If it was my Strat I'd be pissed and it wouldn't matter if fuckin' Moses pinched it either. Somebody else said the guy was just a 'hawk' and I'm guessing Keith would have known it was a 'hawk'. He can probably smell a 'hawk' a mile away. It certainly does make the story easier to swallow. Apparently the guy was bounding after Keith's limo screaming in vain for his guitar back. Then the limo driver/bodygaurd stopped, got out and stuck a beefy finger in the guy's chest and said, "Fuck off, get another guitar". Now, if that's true, it had me thinkin,' wow, Keith can be a bad mother sometimes, can't he?

A spokesman for Richards has today said to The Sun: "He has apologised to Mick because he was trying to be complimentary and ended appearing offensive.

"But that's the end of the matter. He did say that Mick had big balls as in he admired him because he was gutsy and courageous. How would he know anything about the size of his willy?"
After paying $15.00 to get into The Joint to see Ivan Nevill, Darryl Jones. Bernard Fowler, Jimmy Rip (from Jagger's Solo Tour), Blondie, with Charlie Drakeland and Phil Jones on drums. They were already rocking the house when Keith strutted out, with that great big wonderful Keith smile. The place went wild!

"Going to a Go Go", "It's All Over Now", "You Got Me Rockin'", "Wild Horses", "Street Fighting Man" and an extra long (12-14 minute) "Jumpin' Jack Flash".

LUCKY!!!!!!!!!!

Tom Waits found working with Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards "fun" despite his initial fear.

Hellraiser Richards guested on “Rain Dogs” in 1985 and drank everyone under the table with his lengthy drinking sessions - which would see him play guitar all night in the studio during their collaboration.

Waits says, "Well you really can't keep up with Keith. He's from a different stock.

"I didn't realise it at first, but then I met his father and I understood. His dad looked like Popeye. He had a little corncob pipe and the wink in his eye - oh man.

"I was real nervous and trying not to be afraid, but he's a real gentleman, and we had a lot of fun.

"He just loves to play. He'll play at four o'clock in the morning, play until the bottle is gone, like an old troubadour, or until they can't remember any more songs or they turn out the lights and tell us to leave."

The Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl made $305 million at the North American box office. It added an additional $348 million overseas for a grand total of $653 million worldwide. Then, it went on to sell 11 million DVD/VHS units in its first week, making it the largest live-action flick in history for the medium. Is it any wonder that Disney moved quickly to greenlight not just one, but two sequels?

Yes, the second high-seas adventure of Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann will hit theaters in 2006, and according to spokesmen at Disney, will then be followed six months later by a third Pirates film. As the Wachowski brothers did with The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, both films will be shot at the same time. So far, the rumor has the subtitle of the second film as Treasure of the Lost Abyss. The really great news, though, is that the Rolling Stones' Keith Richards has been confirmed for the role of Captain Jack Sparrow's father. If you're unaware why this is significant, Depp modeled the characteristics of Sparrow after those of the musician.

Along with Richards, Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley will all reprise the roles they originated. Additionally, director Gore Verbinski and screenwriters Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott are back on hand as well. (Kim Hollis/BOP)

Which Stones album do you appreciate Keith on the most and why?

Beggars Banquet

As much as I adore the guitar work of Keith on possibly the greatest 1-2-3 back to back to back rock albums of all time (Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, & Exile on Main Street), Beggars Banquet is a pivotal landmark album for the future sound of Keith. Keith was never a psychedelic kind of player, and when many players were still dabbling in this phase in 1968, Keith traded it in for classic Delta Blues. This album paved the way for the Stones as we know them, raw and dirty.
